4 Reasons Why You May be Iron Deficient (and not know it)
A Diet Too Low in Iron-Rich Foods
Only 1 mg of iron is absorbed for every 10 to 20 mg of iron present in the foods you consume. In grains and vegetables, absorption can be as low as 1 mg for every 50 mg of iron present.
Malabsorption
Your body may not be absorbing all the iron you ingest due to various factors.
Acute and Chronic Blood Loss
Blood loss can result from injury, blood donation, gastrointestinal bleeding, menstruation, and other causes.
Poor Absorbing Iron Supplements
In other forms of iron, as little as 1 mg may be absorbed for every 22 mg consumed. When taken as part of a multivitamin, the calcium present can further inhibit iron absorption.
